Loose Diamonds: The Greatest Discovery Since North America!

There are many interesting facts about loose diamonds that people are just not aware of. These naturally created stones are not only gemstones jewelers love to work with, but they are also freaks of nature! It is hard to believe the hardest naturally made material was formed over 100 miles underneath our feet in conditions similar to an unrelenting hell and get closer to the earth's surface via volcanic eruptions.

Diamonds are also the birthstone of April. These certified diamonds make the perfect birthday gift for any lucky lady who was born in this month. As you browse your local jeweler's selection of beautiful diamond jewelry, you certainly want to ask as many questions as you can. You may end up learning a whole bunch of interesting facts about diamonds.

Although loose diamonds are very popular in the jewelry industry, they also have many other industrial uses. Some companies use diamonds in their drills to make them even stronger and able to cut through very hard materials. Dentists also use diamonds to work on teeth because they are so hard and almost never chip or break. When you think about all of the possible uses for diamonds, you can understand why they are highly sought after and why people go to great lengths in order to get their hands on these precious gems.

Give the Gift of Rings This Special Day

There are many different kinds of rings available in your local jewelry store. This particular type of jewelry has always been associated with love, devotion and romance. When a man finds a special lady he wants to marry, he gives her a diamond ring. This displays his love for her and his intention to marry this woman. When a mother wants to give her daughter the perfect gift for her sweet sixteen birthday party, she passes down a pearl ring from her very own collection. This tells her little girl that she is becoming a woman and can be trusted with such meaningful family heirlooms

No matter the occasion, rings have always been associated with significant moments in a person's life. Every single ring in a lady's collection will likely have some momentous story behind it that culminated with the gift of that particular ring. Jewelry is emotional. It brings joy and happiness to people even when they think there is none to be found.

Celebrate this Valentine's Day with your significant other and express to them just how much you love them with the gift of jewelry. Her collection of rings will grow over the years, just like the love she has for you.

You Don’t Have to Be an Athlete to Wear Tennis Bracelets

I used to really like to wear wrestling shoes. There was probably a two or three year stretch when they were on my feet almost constantly. Maybe this was in homage to David Letterman who wore them on his show during the same time period, but I’m more convinced I did it simply because I liked how comfortable they were. The one issue that I would run into would be people who would see them and ask “Do you wrestle?” Nope, never did, never would. They would look at me funny but it wouldn't bother me. I wore them because I liked them. The same thing goes with tennis bracelets.

The name is very misleading. They weren't designed for tennis players. They didn't get their start as a prize for a tournament. They certainly don’t make anyone play the game any better, at least not beyond the superstition that athletes have about wearing certain things every time they compete. It goes back to one tennis player one time in one tournament who wore her favorite diamond bracelet while playing. She was young, she was pretty, and she stopped a very tight match because the bracelet had fallen to the court.  Once she picked up her bracelet she went on to win the tournament. With that simple act, diamond bracelets became known as tennis bracelets and the rest is history.

Fashion pendants to Set Yourself Apart

Everybody wants to look the like a part of a group but nobody wants to look the same doing it. That’s just part of human nature. We want to stand out enough to be noticed but fit in enough not to draw too much attention to ourselves. It is kind of a hard line to maintain, but it can be done simply by paying attention to the little things. One perfect way to blend in and stand out at the same time is by accessorizing with fashion pendants. When you choose to wear something like a diamond fashion pendant, you have the opportunity to show off a little of who you are without doing it in such an obvious way.

Everybody wears jewelry. It’s not as if you are choosing to wear something nonsensical like a basketball hoop on your head. You do that and everyone would point and look at you. That is sometimes the purpose.

I remember when it was a trend of punk music to wear safety pins by the dozens in your clothing. (Granted, by the time this reached my suburban Junior High, it probably wasn't as punk as it had been originally.) You could choose from a selection of color fashion pendants and you can select a design that speaks to you. It could be something as direct as your favorite animal or it could just be a pattern that speaks to you. Whichever it is, because of the inherent nature of fashion pendants to have so many different options, you can be all but guaranteed that nobody else is going to look exactly like you.

Wood You Marry Me?

You've planned everything – from the location, to what you’ll say, even down to the actual design of the ring. Yes, you designed your very own engagement ring, with the help of a professional jeweler of course! Now all you have to do is ask her. Since you've gone to all this trouble, have you considered making your own ring box too?

Sure you the velvet-lined box from the jeweler. It’s nice, but we think you can make it even better. This will take a little bit of work, but will end up putting that special day over the top and all the more romantic. So brush up on your high school wood shop skills and call on your inner mountain man. Okay, don’t go growing a beard, but be thinking manly, burly, and rugged.

Does your girlfriend have a special tree that she used to climb as a kid? Did you guys ever have a “sappy” encounter with one and carve your initials in the bark? Okay, if not just chose a tree from her backyard. We’re sure you can find a sentimental piece of wood somewhere. Choose a branch and cut it down.

After sizing out a smaller section for the lid, make the necessary cuts and sand the wood. Bore a hole in the larger piece and line it with the velvet from the jeweler’s box. Fit the lid by using a dowel that will also allow the lid to spin. It will be the perfect complement to her engagement ring, and a wonderful story to tell for years to come!

A Stranger’s Gift Begets Custom Design

Custom designed jewelry is the product of many influences. Here is one family's story of how and why they created their own memento... The winter of 1942 was an especially hard year for our family. The effects of the Great Depression were still weighing heavily. A season of drought had destroyed another crop. Now war was separating our family. My grandmother recalls that time with a deep sadness.

That winter marked a year since her childhood sweetheart had gone off to war and promised to return and make her his bride. Only one of her dozens of letters had been answered. A parcel containing a simple silk cord strung with glass beads.

When autumn arrived the following year, so too did my grandfather. War-torn and beaten, he climbed the hill to my grandmother’s farm. “Why did you not write?” she cried. Confused, he told her that he never received a letter. She exposed her wrist where she wore the bracelet as a sign of her unwavering commitment.
They found out years later that another private had received every single letter meant for my grandfather. Why this stranger sent the bracelet, we’ll never know. Had he not though, she may have given up.

On their 50th wedding anniversary, my grandfather enlisted a jeweler to create a stunning custom designed braceletfor her. She wears it to this day. The silk bracelet was placed in my grandfather’s casket when he passed. A promise from her, that she too will return home one day.

A Partial History of the Royal Jewels

The royal jewels of England are a magnificent set of regalia that are worn by the leader of the United Kingdom for special occasions, most notably the coronation ceremony. They cover are wide range of objects from crowns and scepters to more mundane objects like spurs and robes. The earliest known use of the jewels was between 200 and 150 B.C.E. but they obviously did not match the splendor and glory of today's vestments.

Containing an astounding seven different crowns and at least four scepters, the modern day jewels are lavishly adorned. So lavishly adorned that, after they were famously stolen in 1303. Although most were recovered shortly after, it is unknown if they were recovered in their entirety. After that they were kept in the Tower of London, with the Tower only allowing people to see them if they paid a fee. This lasted until another attempt was made on the jewels, this time by the infamous Colonel Blood. Since that last attempt the Jewels have been relocated to the Jewel House, a special section of the Tower of London made specifically to house them, under constant armed guard.

Hoping for Famous Diamonds

When I think of famous diamonds, I can’t help but to think of the most powerful influences in the world - love and royalty. The history behind the largest diamonds typically is a love story or one of great power.

When other people think of famous diamonds, the one that comes to mind first is usually the Hope diamond. Although it is on the list of most famous diamonds, it comes in at number 10. The Hope Diamond is known by several different names, such as, the Blue of France and the Tavernier Blue.  It has been described as one of the mostfamous diamonds. Many believe this diamond is cursed. Legend has it that the infamous Hope diamond brings horrible tragedy to the owner. The most widely believed origin of the diamonds curse can be tracked to 1653. This is when French merchant, Jean Tavernier acquired the blue diamond in India. It is said the he plucked the diamond out of an eye from a Hindu statue. For his sacrilege, he was said to have been attacked and killed by dogs.

One of the most famous stories the curse is when it was purchased by the McLean’s in 1912. Shortly after obtaining ownership of the diamond, Evalyn McLean started living a life of constant sorrow. She lost her husband when he left here for another woman, her daughter committed suicide and her son was killed in a car crash. Needless to say, she ended up being committed in an insane asylum.

Many of owners of this diamond have had lead tragic lives. This famous diamond now resides in the Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.

Charm Bracelets: The Ultimate Personalized Jewelry

Out of all the different types of jewelry available on the market today, there is one that not only allows you to customize it when it is purchased, but continues to be customization for years to come after. No other form of jewelry can offer the inherent freedom that is possible with charm bracelets.

Once reserved for teenage girls, charm bracelets have found a home in many women's jewelry collections. The reason is that most of these women were given their bracelet for their birthdays, weddings or even for the birth of their first child. They were given by a close friend that spent the time to choose the perfect charms to adorn the bracelet. Many of the gifted charms are reminders of important past events and surely an inside joke or two between old friends. In many cases, tears are shed upon opening such a simple gift, yet it contains an incredible amount of emotional weight.

This type of bracelet makes for outstanding gifts for the obvious reasons, but also because new charms can be added to them as time goes on. There will always be new, important events between friends and plenty more inside jokes that are immortalized in the charms. Not to mention, new charms are always being designed, which almost guarantees that no two charm bracelets are alike.

Protect Your Kids with ID Bracelets and Tags

Every mom wants to protect and ensure the safety of her kids.  These precious little gems are your whole world and you would go above and beyond to safeguard and monitor their every step. Let’s not go leashing our kids along with the puppy, or scrawling phone numbers on little arms either. There are some pretty cool and affordable options to help mom breathe a little easier during the next school outing or family day trip to the zoo.

You can always go high-tech and drop a tracking device in your kids backpack. But we’re not into the Mission Impossible approach. There are some really great options for ID bracelets, necklaces, or tags. These choices can range from beautiful gold and silver cuffs, to the dog-tag variety. Remember the last concert you attended? Well, maybe not! I bet you remember those wristbands they required to let you consume alcoholic beverages. They have these available for children too.

So, instead of gearing your kid up for the apocalypse or strapping them down like Fido, make the better choice and go with an ID bracelet or even a stamped tag. Tags can be worn, or attached to backpacks or belt loops. There are an abundance of options available for you parents. So, ease your minds a bit and visit a local jeweler to help you out with your options. Or visit some website that features child safety gear.

Vintage Cameo Locket of Memories

I was garage sale-ing the other day when I happened upon a pristine cameo locket.  The ivory cameo was the profile of a woman with up-swept hair and a high collar (no doubt wearing it’s own cameo pin – oh, the irony) and the backing of it was a deep blue.  It was set in a metal that appeared to be sterling silver.  It had a price of $2.

My mom used to tell me a story of how her grandma had a cameo locket and if memory serves me right, it was incredibly similar to this cameo.  In her cameo, my great grandmother had a picture of my great grandfather, who was off at war.  My great grandmother, while raising her three children in the 20’s in his absence, would wear that cameo and clutch it to her heart while praying every night before she went to bed.  She would pray for strength, enough money to keep her children fed and clothed and most importantly, the safe return of her husband.  All her prayers were answered.

This story resonated with me and immediately came back to me upon the viewing of this cameo.  It made me smile and brought me back to an innocent time in my life, listening to a story of a tumultuous time with my great grandparents.

$2 for a this cameo locket????  I paid it.
